Mastering the Pen Tool in Adobe Illustrator

Koning Display: technologically-advanced curves

We released Koning Display in November 2019. Named after the Dutch word for “king,” the design was an in-house side project we revisited over and over again for about a decade-and-a-half. Time and many revisions allow typefaces to ripen. We even invented new constructions to fine-tune contrast in interpolated weights.

Interpolation and Curve Technicalities

At TypoLabs 2018, Luc(as) gave a fast-paced and nerdy-funny presentation about his concerns with current font curve mathematics and variable font technology. Being well-known for taking pride in perfect solutions for technical and aesthetic problems, he is dissatisfied with the current state of affairs and gave a lot of illustrated proof for us to follow along.

TheMix Arabic

This project is a collaboration between Luc(as) de Groot and the renown Arab calligrapher and designer Mouneer Al-Shaarani, with technical support from Pascal Zoghbi.

Interpolation Theory

Luc(as) de Groot’s Interpolation Theory is a theory about the optical behaviour of a family of fonts of increasing weight. It has resulted in a formula for calculating intermediate weights that has been influential among type designers the world over.

Taz Wide & Extended

Die Geschichte der Taz beginnt 1998: Luc(as) de Groot entwirft eine Headline-Schrift für Die Tageszeitung. Visuell sollte die neue Schrift an die (zuvor verwendete) Futura Bold Condensed anschließen. Weitere Anhaltspunkte waren der deutsche Text, also viele Großbuchstaben, sowie kleine Ober- und Unterlängen für möglichst sparsamen Zeilenabstand im Zeitungssatz.

ArrowFont 2.0

Luc(as)’s very first “variable font” was a MultipleMaster font with two axes and 18 arrows, which he created all the way back in 1992.
